Why is yoga so popular these days? I am an old turtle and I have been watching people for a long time. These days they are more stressed-out than ever before. They don’t have time – whatever they think that means.
They especially don’t have time for themselves. So they are very happy when things come packaged together, like yoga for example. Two-in-one or three-in-one [or even better if more than three-in-one] packages are popular.
Yoga is more than three-in-one. It moves, opens and strengthens the physical body, which is designed for movement – and which is so happy and grateful when you move it. It gives a soothing refuge for the mind from the constant buzz of visual and other stimuli that our senses are bombarded with, every minute of every day. It allows the spirit to settle in to its center and find its most natural, centered and relaxed state of being.
And probably the greatest benefit of yoga is that whatever happens to you on your yoga mat, offers you a learning experience that you can then take with you to your everyday life. For example, if you learn how to balance on your yoga mat, this will help you learn how to balance in your everyday life. When you face a difficulty in your yoga practice, you learn how to work yourself through difficult times and you can apply that knowledge then to your everyday life. You learn how and when exactly to make an effort and how and when to consciously relax and you can apply that to your everyday life.
Yoga also meets a basic need that we all have: attention. That is, all people ever want from you others: attention. In your yoga practice you award that attention to yourself, and that makes you feel full, healthy and energized. That is why yoga is so popular.
Relax. Breathe. Be mindful. Give.
