Yogi | Chi Gung

I built Power of Now Oasis to keep myself occupied, create a meeting place for the community and hopefully help a few people by teaching some Asana classes, Chi Gung, and meditation.

I’ve practised yoga and Chi Gung for more than 30 years. I like the principles behind the Sutras and the Tao Te Ching along with the movements which I try to practise on most days. It is easier said than done, but it has helped me throughout my life.

I was a boat captain for many years. In 2010 I sailed into Sanur harbour and was very lucky to find the beachfront property where Angelique lived, which is where we eventually built the studio.

I lived there for a year or so, just taught a few classes and had lots of fun with the Jodie O’Shea kids and angelique. Very blissful days. Then the modern yoga crowds began coming, so I decided to move out and let it go semi-commercial. That enabled us to really help the 2 foundations we support, all the staff and their families, and I hope all the students and visitors too.

The staff are like family to me. The foundation kids are now 50% beneficiaries of any profits and the rest primarily supports other good local causes including scholarships and training for locals, fair salaries for all the staff and the continued development of the studio business – so it can keep doing good things, I hope.

I still hang around there most mornings. I like the ocean and usually do a bit of practise on the beach, and take angelique out for a graze. The foundation kids still visit often to play on the beach or do classes and we still have movie nights and dinner regularly.

We try to maintain standards and ethics in all the courses, retreats and classes we run. We all try to keep it real at Power of Now Oasis and have a bit of fun.

Sanur Community

Our shrine is the ocean.  A rich and very active local community surround the studio, with a large temple and local market close by.  Sanur is well know for its gentle, relaxed atmosphere, its quaint cafes and restaurants, and a multitude of fun activities like kite-surfing, snorkelling and traditional sailing.  The clear water of the coral lagoon, together with the white sand beach, coconut palms, and gentle sea breeze make this a very special part of Bali.

The roads are safe for cyclists, and pedestrians and the beaches are free from noisy, clubs and bars. The main town is chilled out and filled with a harmonious mix of relaxed tourists, ex-pats, locals and families.

There are still lively activities but also spots in which you can be left alone and at peace.  The waves are calm, the beach is brilliant white and pristine, the surf breaks are great to catch a morning or late afternoon ride, the sunset is breathtaking and the sunrise? Well, there aren’t any words to describe it.

So if you are truly looking for a place to unwind during your holiday without all that noise and traffic and massive amount of people, give Sanur a chance.  Mass tourism hasn’t gotten its hands on Sanur (and we pray it never will) which leaves everyone, local, expats and tourists alike a lot more calm and a lot more happy.

The village feel of Sanur has lead us to develop some longstanding partnerships and relationships with other great local businesses.

Sri Ramana Maharshi

Sri Ramana Maharshi

“Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it.  What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside.”

Sri Ramana Maharshi’s Biography

Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) is widely acknowledged as one of the outstanding Indian gurus of modern times. He was born as Venkataraman Iyer, in Tamil Nadu (South India).

At the age of sixteen, he lost his sense of individual selfhood, an awakening which he later recognized as ‘enlightenment’. A few weeks thereafter he travelled to the holy mountain Arunachala, at Tiruvannamalai, where he remained for the rest of his life.

His first years were spent in solitude, but his stillness and his appearance as a holy man soon attracted devotees. In later years, he provided answers to devotees questions but always insisted that silence was the purest teaching. His verbal teachings flowed from his own understanding of Reality. Venkataraman was renamed Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi by one of his earliest followers, Ganapati Muni. This was the name he became known by to the world. In later years, a community grew up around him, where he was available twenty-four hours a day to visitors.

Though worshipped by thousands, he never allowed anyone to treat him as special, or received personal gifts. He treated all beings with equal respect. Since the 1930s, his teachings have also been popularized in the West.

In response to questions on self-liberation and the classic texts on Yoga and Vedanta, Ramana recommended self-enquiry as the principal way to awaken to the “I-I”, realizing the Self and attaining liberation. He also recommended Bhakti Yoga (the Yoga of Devotion), and gave his recommendation to a variety of paths and practices.

Maha Yoga: Sri Ramana’s Teachings

Ramana Maharshi’s teachings focus on using self-inquiry to understand the nature of the mind and the Pure Awareness that makes up the Self that is our true nature. This Pure Awareness is by its very nature Being-Consciousness-Bliss (Sat-Chit-Ananda), that which all beings in existence seek. He strongly believed in Silence as being the best teacher about the Self. Other practices that Sri Ramana recommended to aid in Enlightenment were diet restrictions, breath control, meditation and repetition of mantras.

Several books have been written on his teachings, the essence of which is captured best by a small booklet called ‘Who Am I?’ This little booklet contains the first set of instructions given by Ramana Maharshi. They are direct from his unique experience of self-realization. The original set of questions was asked by one of his devotees which was later presented by Ramana Maharshi himself in prose form.

For more information on Sri Ramana Maharshi and his teachings on Maha Yoga please see the below links. Power of Now Oasis will also be providing free copies of ‘Who Am I’ for those interested in learning more about this form of self-discovery.
